John “Jack” Arnold Vacura was born May 16, 1913 in Badger, MN to Domonik and Anna Vacura and died on May 28, 2007 in Thief River Falls, MN. He was united in marriage to Alma G. Wilcox in February 15, 1937. They resided in Roseau, MN until May of 2004 when they moved to Minnesota Greenleaf Assisted Living in Thief River Falls, MN.

Jack graduated from Badger High School and attended Business College in Grand Forks, ND. As a professional meat cutter he managed meat departments in various grocery stores. He also spent a year in Greenland working for the U.S. government. Jack proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. As a veteran, he was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

As a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Jack served in the Church Council, numerous committees and for several years chaired the men’s annual church dinner. An outdoor enthusiast, Jack enjoyed and treasured the numerous fishing and hunting trips he went on with his brothers, sons and son-in-law. Above all things, Jack loved God, his family, his country and his church.

Left to mourn Jack are his five surviving children; sons, Mitchell (Pearl) Vacura of Roseau, MN; Douglas (Jeri) Vacura of Cotopoxi, CO; Jeffrey (Kathy) Vacura of Thief River Falls, MN; daughters, Ann (Glen) Haugen of Thief River Falls, MN; Mary (Gary) Brandt of Worthington, MN; and daughter in-law, Toni Vacura of Colorado Springs, CO; 19 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and sister in-laws, Esther Grand of Baldwin, WI and Sidona (Melvin) Flum of Loveland, OH.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Alma Vacura; a son, Jan Delos Vacura; a grandson, John Scott Vacura; his parents, Domonik and Anna (Svoboba) Vacura and his 12 brothers and sisters, Edward, Frank, Wesley, William, Domonik, Anna Pelowski, Tillian Gronvold, Louise, Vladimir, Emil, Otto and Adolph.
