Joel Dennis Hixson was born on November 2nd, 1946 to Aaron LeRoy Hixson (Roy) and Mary Lillian Jacobson near Billings, Montana. After growing up in Montana, Oregon, and North Dakota, he went on to earn undergraduate and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of North Dakota.
Joel’s first job after graduation was working at Medtronic in the 1970’s. During these early days of the company, he was involved in developing the first nuclear-powered pacemaker, during which time he enjoyed working and living in Brazil and the Netherlands. This opportunity launched his influential career in the medical device industry, including his role as an executive at St. Jude Medical and other medical device companies.
Joel lived most of his life in Plymouth, Minnesota although he loved to travel, with San Diego, the American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Paris among his favorite destinations. Joel loved boating, fun cars, and following his favorite sports teams, including sharing his love of MLB with his mother. Joel was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, and had a deep appreciation for the arts. In his later years, his hobbies included bird watching, photography, and woodworking.
Joel is survived by his children Carl (Jane), Paul, and Katie (Jared), brother Michael, and former wife, Doris (Dory) Hixson. He loved and spoiled six grandchildren: Cole (14), Miles (12), Ty (9), Olivia (8), Hannah (5), and Claire (3). Even in his last days he maintained his sharp wit and humor. Joel was incredibly proud of his kids who are forever grateful for his generosity and love.
