Jennifer Mary Lewis, M.D., D.P.H., of Edgecomb, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2012, at the age of 74. She was surrounded by her family. Throughout her life, Jennifer was loved for her genuine kindness, willingness to listen deeply, and ability to help family, friends and patients feel at home, no matter the circumstances. Jennifer accomplished many things in her life, but her loving relationships and the deep respect that she earned represent lasting indicators of the mark that she left. She will be sorely missed. The elder daughter of Brian and Helga Hall, Jennifer was born in Poole, Dorset, England. She received her medical degree in 1962 from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London University and completed her residency at Wembley Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Blantyre, Malawi) and the London School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, where she received a gold medal in Public Health and her D.P.H. degree. Jennifer also played field hockey for the West of England. Jennifer and John M. Lewis, M.D. met at medical school, and were married in 1963 in Christchurch, England. After practicing medicine for several years in rural Devon, England, they moved their young family to the United States in 1971.
