She was born to Harry and Eva (Riggs) Staley on August 21, 1940 in Buhl, MN. She graduated from Buhl High School in 1958. She attended Hibbing Community College and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She married Charles W. Decker in 1962, and focused on raising her family through the early 1970’s. She was known as a talented pianist, and began to perform with local dinner theaters and Community College productions. She moved further into teaching piano lessons and taught many local Hibbing Students until retiring in 2010. She also was music Director at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church from 1982 until 2011, and directed school choirs for the local public school system for many years.
Jan was an avid gardener and was always very proud of her gardens, in town, and up on her family land in north Buhl. She was also an active bird watcher, and co-organized the local chapter of the annual bird counts for many years. She was never happier than being in the woods, walking or cross-country skiing and looking at the birds and enjoying their songs. She participated in frog counts, as well as water testing for MN environmental monitoring. Her love of nature and music defined her peaceful and loving ethic.
She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
