Janet Kern Hutson Councell of Denton, MD, died Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at the UMMC in Easton, MD. She was 91 years old. Born at her home on Thawley Road near Denton on November 27, 1924, Mrs. Hutson Councell was the daughter of the late Clarence J. Kern and Mildred Ramsdell Kern. Her first husband, Wallace E. Hutson, died in 1992. Her second husband, William S. Councell, died in 2000. Mrs. Hutson Councell graduated from Caroline High School in Denton and attended the Georgia Maude Beauty School in Baltimore, MD. In 1966, she was certified as a MD Vocational Cosmetology Teacher and in 1976, she received a Master’s Equivalency from the University of MD, becoming an Advanced Professional. From 1942 until 1974, she owned two Beauty Salons and from 1966 until 1987, she was a Teacher of Cosmetology at the Caroline County Vocational Center. From 1985 until 1987, she was the Vice Principal of the Caroline Vocational Center. She manufactured Kura Kreme Hand and Body Cream Cosmetics from 1960-1990. From 1979 until 1983, she was a Denton Town Commissioner, becoming Mayor in 1984. From 1986 until 1990, she was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Democratic State Central Committee. She was the Political Action Committee Chairman of the Caroline Teachers Association, an active member of the American and Maryland Vocational Associations, the National Education Association, the MD State Teachers Association, and the Caroline County Teachers Association. She was Past President of the MD Association of Technical, Trade, and Industrial Educators, the Caroline County Teachers Association, the Caroline Business and Professional Women’s Association, the Caroline County Soroptimist Association, Two Schools Parent, Teachers Association, Eastern Shore Cosmetologists Association, Bethany House Auxiliary, and the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Women. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks, member of the Caroline Chapter No. 62 Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Inc., Trustee and Finance Chairman and a choir member of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, a member of Iota Lambda Nu Chapter Fraternity of U. of MD, Chairman of Keep MD Beautiful for Caroline County. From 1980 until 1981, she was the State President of the MD Federation Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc., and had been the Chaplain of the State B.P.W. Club. In 1980, she was awarded the Woman of the Year by Governor Harry Hughes. She was in the Who’s Who in the East from 1983 until 1984 and in 1984 was listed in the Directory of Distinguished Americans. In 1992, she transferred her church membership to the Thawley’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hutson Councell is survived by a son, W. Edward Hutson, Jr. of Greensboro, MD; a daughter, Janet H. Magaha (David) of Alamo, TX; three grandchildren: Dr. D. Gavin Magaha (Heather) of Clemmons, NC and P. Garrett Magaha (Kimberly) of Salisbury, MD; one granddaughter, Kaytlin M. Curren (Paul) of Denton; four great grandchildren: Hayden, Olivia, Evan, and Bryson; three step children: Wanda Morgan, Gail C. Litz, and W. Sherman Councell III; and several step grand and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Merlyn Collins, Doris Voshell, and Joyce Ober ; and a grandchild, Colleen Magaha.
