Jane B. States of Denton, MD, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, September 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was 88 years old.

Born in Denton on January 20, 1929, Mrs. States was the daughter of the late Ernest Joseph Brown and Ethel Belle Culver Brown. Her husband, G. Earl States, died March 4, 2002.

Mrs. State’s grew up in Denton and lived there all of her life. She graduated from Caroline High School in Denton in 1946 and Goldey Business School in Wilmington, DE in 1947. Most of her working years were spent in Denton at the Clerk of the Circuit Court Office, Choptank Electric, Secretary at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and the Department of Assessments and Taxation for the State of MD. She retired in 1996.

Through the years, Mrs. States belonged to many local civic clubs, catered for private parties and the Denton Lions Club, also making wedding cakes. She was a member of the Auxiliary of Harrington Moose #534, AARP (both local and national), and was a life-long member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was Chairperson of the church Flower Committee (For 100 years!), the Sunshine Committee, and served on many committees and volunteered whenever extra help was needed.

In 1948, Jane married Benj. F. Johnson, Jr. From that marriage, they had three children: James Robert Johnson (Diane) of Denton, Patricia Leah Thomason (Tommy) of Denton, and Barbara Anna Johnson of Denton. In 1981, Mrs. States married G. Earl States and the enjoyed travelling until health issues became a problem. Earl died in March 2002.

In addition to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and their families, Jane is survived by one brother, Ashby Brown of Denton; three sisters: Ella Marie (Renie) Bieber of Radcliff, KY, Ethel (Honey) Jordan of Wilmington, NC, and Lettie and Bob Jackowiak of Zephyrhills, FL; and a special sister-in-law, Rosie Bates; a life-long friend, Bette Tribbitt Willis; and many special nieces and cousins. She is predeceased by three brothers: W. Henry Brown, Melvin Brown, and Joseph Brown; two sisters: Nancy A. Brown and Louise B. Cassity; and a great grandson, Xavier Dawson.
