James Nelson Beall died of pancreatic cancer at Collingswood nursing home in Rockville, MD on Monday December 17, 2018 at 74 years of age.

Nelson was a sweet and wonderful man. Growing up in the wholesome countryside around Clarksburg and Damascus MD, he loved it and lived there all his life.  As a gentle giant, he often said, “it is my goal to make as many people smile as I can”. And he did just that, often saying just a small friendly word or joke, making a big difference in a stranger’s day.

Nelson is survived by his wife Shelley of 45 years, two sons, Russell and Charles, sisters Susan Lindsay and Elaine Beall, nephew Scott Lindsay, niece Noelle Newcomer and her husband Tim Newcomer.  We all love him dearly and are blessed to have had him in our lives.

Mr. Beall ran two companies throughout his life, installing and maintaining swimming pools, as well as an excavation company.

Nelson loved bluegrass music and attended the Gettysburg bluegrass festival twice a year with Shelley. He played upright bass in a bluegrass band many years ago, performing on stage in Baker park. He was a purist and enjoyed the classic bluegrass sound.  Also a fan of barbershop quartet music he sang for several years with the Frederick Catoctones.  He would often close out his evenings going to sleep to the pure and uplifting gospel music from his favorite band, the Statler Brothers. Many people will miss Mr. Beall, the twinkle in his eye, the kind words, and the humor soothing even the most difficult of situations.
