Jim Hughes, of Bristol, died Aug. 15 at his home. He was born Nov. 6, 1929 in East Orange, N.J. to Evelyn Mader Hughes and Harold Hughes. His parents moved to Brunswick in 1939 where Jim went to Brunswick High School, graduating from Belmont High School in New Hampshire. Jim attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, before being drafted during the Korean War when he graduated from O.C.S. He later joined the Christian Science Monitor in Boston where he was a highlight regarded photo journalist. He moved back to Maine to work as an artist full-time in 1972, working in oil and watercolor. Jim also traveled and painted widely in the United States, Europe, Puerto Rico and the Commonwealth of Domenica. Jim was predeceased by his eldest son, David. He is survived by his wife Susan, whom he married in Georgetown; sons, Glenn A., Tom D. and John Hughes of California; brothers, Ralph A.
