     Lt. Colonel James A Fife, Ret. passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at the Caroline Hospice Home, in Denton MD, surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old.

     Born and raised in Middlebury, Vermont, Mr. Fife was the son of the late Harry Moore Fife and Ella Sanford Fife. He was retired from the U.S. Army, having served from 1945 until 1972, including a number of years at the Pentagon. He then worked for the State of Vermont before becoming an Administrator with the Department of Justice as the Assistant to the Commissioner of the Federal Parole Board.

     Mr. Fife is survived by his wife, Janet M. Fife of Denton; two daughters: Laura A. Kovatch (Jim) of Hurlock, MD and Suzie M. Lane of Mt. Airy, MD; two sons: Peter L. Fife (Brenda) of Williston, VT and Brad E. Dykeman of Huntingtown, MD; one brother, Harry M. Fife, Jr. of Edmonds, WA; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nona May Peck and Doris McGowan.

     He was an avid sailor, gardener, hiker and fisherman. He loved traveling and was an accomplished cook. All who knew him will remember him as a very passionate and compassionate speaker and writer. He never lost his love for his native Vermont, especially times spent with family at Lake Dunmore and his hometown of Middlebury. Deep in his heart was a love for Nova Scotia where his parents immigrated from and where he spent many happy summers in his youth.
