Jacqueline Abraham Miller, of Laytonsville, Maryland, passed away on May 5, 2022.
Jackie was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 22, 1931, the daughter of Dr. Clarence and Hazel Abraham. Jackie was predeceased by 1st Lt. Leon Herman “Gus” Miller, Jr., her husband of 65 years. Jackie is survived by her sister Linda Niermann and Linda’s children Eric and Jennifer; Jackie’s children Kim Trollinger and her husband Ed, Lori Engelberg and her husband Eric, and Mark and his wife Naomi; grandchildren Matthew Trollinger and his wife Danielle, Kristin Townsend and her husband Justin, Andrea Engelberg, Danielle Miller and David Miller; and great-grandchildren Decker, Peter, Anna Lynn, and Evelyn Grace. Jackie and Leon were members of the Church of the Redeemer in Gaithersburg, Maryland for almost 35 years, and were active in both marriage and prison ministries.
Jackie was born at Methodist Hospital and raised on North Linwood Avenue. Jackie met Gus in 1952 while she was attending Indiana University, and Gus was attending Purdue as an ROTC and mechanical engineering student. Jackie and Gus were married on June 13, 1953, and two days later on June 15, 1953 Jackie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Indiana University. Jackie was recognized by Indiana University for high scholastic achievement honors, was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and engaged in many philanthropic activities while at Indiana University. In addition to being extremely intelligent, Jackie was stunningly beautiful and honored as Golden Girl at Indiana University in 1953. After Jackie and Gus graduated college, Jackie became a “military wife” while Gus served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After Gus returned they moved to Washington D.C. in 1957. Gus worked for Johns Hopkins University, the Pentagon, the Department of the Army, and later for the World Bank. Jackie worked as a teacher for the Montgomery County School System her entire career.
Not surprisingly, just like her intelligence, beauty, and heart of gold, Jackie’s efforts as a Mom were exceptional. She committed her entire life to her children, and mustered every resource and minute of her time to ensure their growth, health, and education. She taught us that our worth is not measured by our possessions or accomplishments, but by how we lead our lives and what we do with what has been entrusted to us – our faith, character, love for family and others. And through a mixture of prayer, pure worry and guiding us with her wisdom, she ensured that we are here today with our own wonderful families and appreciation for those around us. Jackie was truly the nicest, most intelligent, beautiful, wonderful and sincere person we have ever known, loving and supporting her family and every person she met alike. For us to also have had Jackie and Gus as our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, as our mentors, examples and strength, has been an incredible experience. As with Gus’s passing, there are simply not enough words to capture how much she taught us, how much she loved her family, and the sacrifices she made. We will always cherish and remember the good times we had together and her love for us all.
