Surrounded by three of her six children, Ivajean Gutherz, age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2018.

She was a resident of St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS. Ivajean was born in 1930 to Christy and Marvel Mathews who lived in Streeter, North Dakota. She lived in North Dakota until age 12; then moving with her family to Denver, CO she completed her secondary education and attended college. At Denver University she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. After graduation, she moved with girlfriends to San Diego, California to begin her teaching career. It was in San Diego that she met Elmer Gutherz and the two were married in 1955. Elmer and Iva would have six children and jobs that took the couple from Idaho, California, and Georgia, to a culmination in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Dedication to her family and the education of children defined Ivajean. In Pascagoula she taught at Our Lady of Victories before transferring to Sacred Heart/Resurrection Elementary to teach and later become the librarian. Iva gave years of service to her profession, church, and community.

Ivajean is proceeded in death by her husband. She is survived by six children, Faith (Storm) Rogers, Christy Gutherz, David (Christie) Gutherz, Alan (Cherelle Paoletti) Gutherz, Diana (Scott) Williams, and Robert (Glynis) Gutherz. She is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
