Ione Marie Carlson, age 82 of Hibbing died Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing. She was born October 7, 1936 in Hibbing, the daughter of Jalmer and Elinor (Gardner) Maki, was a graduate of Hibbing High school, and had earned a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. She married Ronald David Carlson on July 31, 1954 in Hibbing. Ione had lived in Denver, CO and Mountain Home, ID prior to returning to Hibbing in 1957. She was employed as a cashier for Red Owl grocery store and then as a CNA for Leisure Hills, and the 7th Avenue Apartments. Ione enjoyed many types of handwork, including: crocheting, knitting, tatting, cross stitch, and most recently wood carving.
Ione is survived by her children: Christine Johnson of Marble, Gail (Pat McGauley) Nevalainen of Hibbing, and Russell D. Carlson of Hibbing; grandchildren: Sarina (John) Johnson Like of Duluth, Eric (Tessie) Johnson of Keewatin, Shawn Nevalainen of Iowa City, IA, and Charla (Josh) Beane of White Bear Lake; grandchildren: Gracie, Rayna, Ingmar, and Daphne; extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband: Ronald; brother: Tom Maki; and former son-in-law: Steve Nevalainen.
