HERMINE MAZZARA (nee Krikorian), age 72, passed away peacefully on May 20th 2016 with her family by her side. Born in Highland Park on September 1, 1943, her parents were Souren and Angeline (Dedeian) Krikorian. As survivors of the Armenian Genocide, Hermine’s mother, grandmother Kohar, and aunty Rose had come to the USA in 1923; her father had come from Tiblisi, Georgia. As a child, Hermine loved going to Sunday School with her sisters at St. John Armenian Church. They learned about their cultural heritage and stories from the bible. Hermine has a long history there, as her grandmother, Kohar Dedeian, was one of the founding members. Hermine was also an active member in the ACYOA church youth group. Also dedicated to ballet dancing, at fifteen years of age, she sailed on the Queen Mary to Europe to study dance in France and England. She was an accomplished ballerina earning a highly coveted role as a soloist in the Detroit City Ballet Company. After graduating from Fordson High School, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Education degree in college and later taught 2nd & 3rd grade students in school. She married her high school sweetheart, Peter J. Mazzara in 1965, and became a devoted wife and mother to her three children. During their 50 year marriage, Hermine was a good cook, emulating her own mother. Among the many enjoyable family outings, summers in Camp Dearborn were most memorable. Vacations in Florida with extended family were special times, as well. Hermine loved to travel, from wine tours in California, to taking cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean with her loving husband, Peter.
