Herman Y. Genthner, 79, passed away on the afternoon of May 19th at the Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath with his wife and son by his side. Born in Bremen on January 19th 1932, he was the son of Frederick and Stella Mae (Yeaton) Genthner. Herman grew up in Bremen, attending schools there. He left school early to help his father work in the woods, and to help provide for the family. Herman was an incredibly hard worker and he continued this work ethic throughout his life. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought for his country during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he came home to Maine and married the love of his life, Hazel Lane. The couple would live in many towns throughout Lincoln County before settling in Pemaquid. Throughout the years, he worked as a clam digger, a lobsterman, a carpenter and caretaker of cottages, was the assistant manager of the New Harbor Co-op, he cut wood and mowed lawns, and for 19 years, he worked as a farmer at Harvey Hope Hen Farm. Herman enjoyed reading and loved to follow the weather, but above all, he was a devoted husband and father who always worked hard to provide for his family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant sister, Eunice Genthner; and three brothers, Phillip Genthner, Gerald Genthner and Morrill Genthner. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Hazel Genthner of Pemaquid; two sons, Larry Genthner of Newcastle and Brian Genthner of Old Orchard Beach; two sisters, Nancy Lane of Pemaquid and Priscilla Quintal of Windsor; as well as several nieces and nephews.
