Helen Lee Short Ballard of Lewes, Delaware, quietly died after a very short illness on June 3, 2017, at the age of 95. She was born on April 8, 1922, in Hillsboro, Maryland, the second child of Luther Aaron Short and Helen Dora Short.
Helen was trained as a nurse in Wilmington, worked as an operating room nurse at Wilmington General, and ended up as the factory nurse at the General Motors plant on Boxwood Road, Wilmington. Upon retirement, she and her husband, Jack, split their time between Boca Raton, FL, and her birthplace in Hillsboro, MD. After her husband died, she eventually moved to Lewes, DE.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, John “Jackie” Ballard, her husband Harold P. “Jack” Ballard, her brother Luther “Sonny” Short, and her sister, Sarah Marsh.
She is survived by four cousins, Emily Brougher of Markleton, PA, John Hurd of Dover, DE, L.T. Short of Denton, MD, Nancy Van Horne of New Hope, PA, and four nephews, Luke Short of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, James B. Marsh of Sandusky, OH, Jon Marsh of Bethesda, MD, and Brent Marsh of Georgetown, DE.
