Helen Winifred Kivela, age 79 of Cedar Valley, received the ultimate Christmas gift and was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 25, 2014 in the Hillcrest Alice Residence. She was born August 8, 1935 in Bigfork to Armas and Emma (Samuelson) Jacobson and raised in Marcell, MN. She was a 1953 graduate of Deer River High School and the Miller Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital, Grand Rapids Hospital and Ely Bloomensen Hospital. Helen married Leo Kivela on May 3, 1958 in Grand Rapids. In addition to raising their three children, she was the bookkeeper for L & K Masonry for more than 20 years. Helen enjoyed berry picking, canning, sewing, making bread and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events. A resident of Cedar Valley for 56 years, she was a longtime member of Cedar Valley Evangelical Lutheran.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years: Leo; children: Wayne Kivela of Aurora, Janis (David) Hooey of Duluth and Roger (Sarah) Kivela of Hibbing; siblings: Ardis (Wally) Hammen of Everett, WA, Doris (Pete) Schultz of Deer River, Dale (Carol) Jacobson of Marcell, and Mike (Cathy) Jacobson of Pontiac, MI; grandchildren: Bryan, Derek, and Kaydi Hooey; Hannah, Joshua, and Emma Kivela; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Owen Jacobson, Stanley Jacobson, Donald Jacobson, and Shirley Schmit.
