Harry Joseph Johnson, Sr., 94, of Sykesville, died Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Carroll Dove House.
Born August 21, 1918 in Atwood, Kansas, he was the son of the late John William and Mary Benning Johnson. He was the husband of Virginia Dare Johnson of Sykesville. They had been married for 63 years.
He had worked at Black and Decker Corporation in Hampstead for 30 years retiring in 1981 as a machinist. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific theater in Australia, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands and the Philippine Islands under the 8th Calvary. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart and numerous other medals. He was a member and Past Master in 1991 of Lebanon Lodge #175 in Manchester. He was also a life member of the VFW Moleville Post #467 in Westminster, Belvedere R.A. Chapter # 39, Boumi Temple A.A.O.N..M.S., Western Maryland Shrine Club, Carroll Council #7 R.& S.M., Carroll Commandery #17 Knights Templar, Bonnie Blink Daylight Lodge #1, Freedom Masonic Lodge #112 and The Past Masters Association of Carroll County He was a member of Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Delbert Johnson and Bonnie, Harry Johnson, Jr. and DeAnn and David Johnson and Thelma. He is also survived by brother Henry Johnson, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Gladys Haller, Alveda McMurty and brothers Johnnie and Francis Johnson.
