Harold Albert Maack, age 93, longtime resident of Babbitt, MN, died Monday, April 16, 2012, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born March 23, 1919 in Oscar Twp., MN, the son of Ferdinand and Anna (Stroschein) Maack. He worked on the family farm until his induction into the US Army. Harold served with the 382nd infantry 96th Division in the Pacific Theatre, Okinawa, Leyte Island and the Philippines during WWII. He was united in marriage to Alma Landberg on June 7th, 1944, in Fergus Falls, MN.
Harold worked for Reserve Mining in Babbitt for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt, which he helped to build, and where he served as custodian for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Babbitt American Legion and VFW clubs, and the Sr. Citizens. He enjoyed walleye fishing on the northern lakes, deer hunting, taking Sr. Citizen Bus Trips, and wintering in Yuma, AZ.
Harold is survived by his three daughters: Karen (Tim) Younggren of Duluth, Pam (Brian) Leppanen of Eveleth, and Susan (Brian) Maki of Ely; his sister: Helen (Pete) Hamlin of Kansas City, KS; his sister-in-law: Mary Lou Maack of Elizabeth, MN; six grandchildren: Richard (Jolene) Johnson, Scott (Danya) Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, Kelly (Brett) Larson, Anna (Colin) Yahnke, and Christine (Paul) Wachsmuth; 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Alma in 2005; brothers: Ernest, Alvin, Max, Walter, and Elroy; sisters: Marie Boese, Ethel Salmon, LaVerne Overland, and Fern Seelye; and an infant son.
