Hal Bakke, 73, of Warroad died Saturday, August 19, 2006 in his home with his family by his side after a long battle with multiple system atrophy. He was born December 22, 1932 in Minneapolis, MN to Dr. Harold and Myrtle (Myhre) Bakke, Sr.. Hal graduated from Washburn High School in 1951. Some of Hal’s fondest childhood memories where made on Lake Minnetonka in Giddeons Bay. He started his studies at St. Olaf College and then he went on to the Brown College of Broadcasting and graduated with a degree in broadcasting. His first broadcasting job was in 1956 at KWAD in Wadena, MN and then he moved in 1959 to work at KRAD in East Grand Forks, MN. Hal was involved in many facets of broadcasting with KRWB in Roseau, MN, including being the station manager until his retirement.
Hal married Joan Ellenson in Warroad, MN on February 15, 1964 where they have resided for the past 42 years. In 1964, Hal was a co-founder of the Christian Brothers Hockey stick Company. He served two terms on the Warroad City Council. Hal was also the owner and operator of the High-Flite Airplane Brokerage Company in Warroad. Hal had a passion for flying and it was a very difficult day when he couldn’t fly due to health problems but he was always willing to go for a plane ride. He was instrumental in getting the Warroad Trap Club started and was a member of the Lions Club and a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Even though he was not a native of the Warroad area he considered this his home.
