Gregory John Peterson of Cook, MN was called home to the Kingdom of God on March 24, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 60 years old. Greg was born on December 29, 1955 the son of James “Red” and Sue (Thompson) Peterson. He was their first born child. During his lifetime, Greg was employed at Red Owl in Virginia. He was also employed by US Steel until his father passed away and he then relocated to Duluth to take over the Piedmont Little Store his parents owned. For the past 20 years he’s been the owner of BG’s Bar and Grill in Mt. Iron. Greg was an active supporter of the area charities, youth sports, and community events. He was a member of the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association, the Laurentian Chamber of Commerce and the NRA. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his pool and golf teams.
Since he was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, Greg has been a champion of the East Range Care Partners and the Sand Lake Shuffle. He held 2 fundraisers and donated tens of thousands of dollars to help support local people fighting cancer. A benefit is scheduled to take place this year on May 21st.
Greg was an avid outdoorsman and had a great respect for the environment and for wildlife. He enjoyed watching deer in the yard at his home and never let a birdfeeder go empty.
Greg is survived by his wife Donna; step-daughters: Tina (Steve) Drake and Shelly Babiracki; brothers: Rich (Rhonda Allen) Peterson, Jeff (Melinda Mitchell) Peterson, and Tim (Tish Griggs) Peterson; grandchildren: Gavin Flaim, and Amelia and Zachary Babiracki – he called them his “babies”; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Greg had many friends and family who loved him and respected him including his BG’s family, who were very important to him, especially Wayne Russo. Greg adored his pet cats and found them to be a source of comfort.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Sue Peterson.
