Evelyn passed away unexpectedly at her home where she resided with her daughter and son in-law. Evelyn was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was born January 6, 1932 in New Gloucester Maine to Ernest & Arlene Cushman Berry.
Evelyn was a graduate of Greely HS proud of it. When one of her children or grandchildren would play a sport against Greely she would say “no matter what the outcome is I will be a winner”. She recently attended her 62nd class reunion.
Evelyn’s life was spent caring for everyone around her making sure that they were happy and had everything they needed. In 2010 she suffered a stroke which caused her to slow down a bit however it did not stop her road trips with Nate, volunteering and cooking dinner every night.
She took great pride in her family and was the one that would get everyone together for family gatherings and would spend many days/hours planning and cooking for the event. She loved feeding others, many in Gray have the memories of her famous meatballs and no one ever left one of her gatherings hungry. She could be found the 1st Saturday of every month at the Legion cooking and preparing for the Bean Suppers. She was a devoted member of the Post 86 Legion Auxiliary, where she spent many hours volunteering for whatever she could do to make money for the post. She spent many hours making afghan’s for the Veterans in Togus or to raffle off to raise money for the Special Olympics. Evelyn’s favorite employment was being a Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Although she worked at Cole Farms for many years where she touched many lives, she worked nights so she could be home for her 5 children all day.
Evelyn is predeceased by her Parents Ernest & Arlene Cushman Berry, her husband Edward Leighton, two brothers Norman and Lewis Berry, two sisters Elizabeth “Betty” Pukanasis and Sally Brown, two grandchildren Kaylor and Robert Young.
