Grace Irene Apgar passed away peacefully at her home in Edgecomb, Maine on Thursday, December 5th 2013. Born on June 24, 1912, in Fort Lee, NJ, Grace spent over 101 years in the pursuit of happiness for her family, her friends and herself. With husband Archibald “Arch” Apgar, she raised three children, George Apgar (married to Joan), Aaron “Ron” Apgar (married to Lynn), and Susan Apgar Sefcik (married to George) at their homestead ‘Big Brook’ in Marlboro, NJ. Grace was a talented ceramic artist and teacher, whose legacy lives on through her many pieces, particularly her line of ‘Toby’ jugs. She was a lover of adventure, deterred by neither age nor convention. If she was able – and she always was – Grace led the charge towards new experiences. Be it traveling, enjoying nature and the arts, or sharing a good meal with family, if there was fun to be had, she would not miss it. And on the topic of food, she was an excellent cook who never failed to come up with an interesting menu for each family meal. As with her children, Grace treasured all of her family and friends. Grandsons Gregory, Christopher and Ben Apgar; and granddaughters, Laurie Chandler, Carrie, Susan and Kathleen Sefcik, looked to their grandmother for love and advice, wisdom and whimsy, and a constant admonition to “Just have fun.” Great grandchildren, Megan and Taylor Chandler, as well as Sophia and Aleksey Apgar were her treasures who got her undivided attention when they were together. Her husband Archibald Charles Apgar, sister Ethel Margaret Searls, brother Allen Henry Searls, and son Aaron Charles Apgar, predeceased her. Grace Irene Apgar blessed the Earth for over a century, but those who knew her, loved her or just simply met her, will remember her spirit far longer.
