E. Gordon “Gordy” Halverson, the son of Olga (Weidner) and Marvin Halverson, was born on August 25, 1922 in Walhalla, North Dakota. He attended school through the eighth grade, and later received his High School Honorary Diploma on November 11, 1999, granted by the United States Government. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during WWII. He was a master Mechanic on the submarine, “Spot.” Gordy married Norma Goos on April 30, 1949. He and Norma had two children- Gary on January 2, 1952 and Nancy on January 2, 1957. He worked for the Roseau School District as a bus driver through the Sunsten Pontiac Garage in 1948. In 1949, Gordy was hired by the Roseau School District to be Supervisor of the Transportation Department, and also a mechanic. He enjoyed his job helping children of all ages. He started Halverson Sand and Gravel in 1953 and became Incorporated on January 2, 1978. He was actively engaged in the business until his time of death.
Gordy enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, bowling, thoroughbred horses, card playing, horseshoes, square dancing and most of all his family and friends. He was later a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. a” Roseau Chapters, member of the Pioneer Farm Board, the Roseau Lions Club, the First Lutheran Church, and a charter member of the Roseau Eagles.
Gordon Halverson passed away on February 5, 2007 at the Sheltering Oaks Manor in Roseau at the age of 84.
He is survived by his wife, Norma of Roseau; son, Gary (Karen) Halverson of Roseau; daughter, Nancy (Peter) Thiessen of Steinbach, MB; five grandchildren, Rachel Bell, Chad Edbom, Amanda, Andy and Alex Halverson; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Ethyn, Austyn and Stephen Bell; and brother, Sinclair (Ethlyn) Beireis of Medina, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Florence; and an infant brother.
