Gladys Margaret Sluka, age 93, of Badger passed away on November 29 at the Greenbush Nursing Home.

Gladys Sluka, the daughter of Mollie (Bendickson) and Ernest Meier was born on July 11, 1913 in Stokes Township. She was raised and received her education in Badger, MN and graduated from Badger High School in 1932. After High School she attended Teachers Training School in Warroad for two years.

Gladys’ first teaching position was in Salol, MN. She taught for several years and then married Henry Sluka in Thief River Falls on July 5, 1937. They farmed and started a dairy herd. They had three children, Ronald, Jerome, and Maxine.

Gladys was very involved in her church. She was on the church council, and taught Religious Education, as well served on the ladies groups of the church. She served on the school board in district #696 for 21 years, and was the chair person of the Roseau County Retired Teachers Association. She was active in the Roseau County Farmers Union as Treasurer, and also lobbied in Washington D.C. for farm prices and fair labeling. She wrote for many years for the Badger Enterprise (Stokes Township News), and she and Henry owned the Hank’s CafAC. in Badger for a few years. Gladys also found time to help Henry on the farm with many of the duties.
