George Ellis McComesky, age 69 of Elliot Lake – Eveleth died Saturday, July 6, 2013 in Essentia-St. Mary’s Duluth. He was born March 7, 1944 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Edward and Rose (Swiczkowski) McComesky. He was a graduate of Rogers High School and Tiffin University. George entered the Marine Corps in 1962 and proudly served with the 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion during the Viet Nam War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star with Combat V, Purple Heart with star, Good Conduct Medal with Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Star, and a Presidential Unit Citation; and was discharged from duty in 1972. George married Shirley Oien on January 22, 1966. After her passing in 1988, George married Diane Gangl on October 21, 1989 in Virginia. George was employed by the Carey Ohio Police Department, the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, and served with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office for 26 years, retiring in 2004. In his retirement, George worked at the Quarry Golf Course, and served as a bailiff/court security for the St. Louis County Court System from 2008 to 2013. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Kolstad Chapter # 23, the Mark and George Klobuchar VFW Post # 4456, U.S. Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Mesabi Humane Society, Eveleth Elks Lodge, and the Arrowhead Peace Officers Association. He was a past member of the St. Louis County Deputy Sheriff’s Association and the Minnesota Peace and Police Officers Association. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, supporting the New York Yankees and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was known for his smoked chicken and wine making. He loved to support his nieces and nephews by attending their sporting events, and keeping in touch with his Marine Corps buddies. George was a man of passion for the Marine Corps, God, his Country, his family, and taking care of his “Princess”. He was a role model to many, and will be sorely missed.
George is survived by his wife: Diane; children: Mick (Laurel) McComesky, Michelle (Brian Grannemann) McComesky, and Lisa (Earl) Salisbury; grandchildren: Earl Salisbury IV, Keifer McComesky, Katie McComesky, Cody Grannemann, and Cameron Salisbury; siblings: Ed ( Maggie) McComesky, Diana (Bud) Osterman, and Linda (John) Juhasz, Sisters-in-law: Lyn (Rudy) Popovich, Patty (Ken) Koivunen, and Sheila (Tim) Nyberg; Nephews: Jason Osterman, Rusty McComesky, Jeff (Gina) Popovich, Paul Nyberg, and Alex Nyberg; Nieces: Marda (Chuck) Perrotta, Amy McComesky, Lisa (Jeff) Olmscheid, and Michelle (Shannon) Matteson; his beloved cats: Jack and Jimmy, numerous and loved great nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife: Shirley; cherished uncle: Frannie Swiczkowzki, nephew: Kenny Koivunen, and mother-in-law: Angie Gangl.
