Fred Paul Smith, age 70 of Greenwood Township, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 in his home, surrounded by loved ones, after a brief battle with cancer. Fred was born November 27, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of David A. and Vernice (McConnell) Smith, was born and raised in Waukee, Iowa and graduated Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in business. Fred was employed as an accountant prior to “moving north”. He built two barges which he owned and operated as Smith’s Landing on Lake Vermilion; designed and built Pier 77 mini-golf course, and owned and operated Fred’s Kettle Corn. Fred was a 25 year member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as Captain; and was a co-founder of the Laurentian North Fire Coalition. He was a proud member of the Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma and will also be remembered for his portrayal of Jacob Marley in “A Dinner with Dickens”.
Fred is survived by his fiancée: Peggy Nelson; brother: Marty (Ilene) Smith of Fort Dodgem Iowa; sister-in-law: Patricia Smith of Rock Hill, SC; brother-in-law: Rick Burns of Mesa, AZ; his faithful German Shepherds: Hunter and Abbey; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Norma Jean and Bonnie and brother: Brett.
