A gentleman who built his life on faith, family, and friends, Frank L. Ciangi, Sr., died on July 26, 2010 at Green Acres retirement facility. He was born May 24, 1913 in Chicago to Luigi and Assunta Ciangi. Frank graduated from Chicago’s McKinley High School in 1931 and worked as a typist in a freight office while attending school. He enrolled in the Skookie Valley Civilian Conservation Corp in 1933 and was made foreman of his work crew that cleared land and poured cement. He was the catcher on the camp’s baseball team that won the CCC National Championship in 1934.
Frank Ciangi and Mildred Dalicandro were married on September 11, 1937 and they had a son, Frank, Jr. and a daughter, Suzanne. Frank worked at G.M. Fisher Body Plant in Lansing and his work ethic reflected his number one priority in life, which was to provide for his family and raise his children in a small town. He coached American Legion baseball in the early 1950’s and was an original member of the Ionia High School football boosters who formed in the 1950’s to raise money for an electronic scoreboard. An avid sports fan, he followed the Chicago White Sox and baseball was important to him all of his life.
After retirement in 1978, Frank enjoyed playing golf with Tony Balice, Monty Hood, and Bill Daddazio and the foursome was known as the “Silver Foxes.” Frank and Millie enjoyed winters in Ruskin, Florida, until her passing in 1996. He was also preceded in death by son Frank Jr., in 1984; brothers, Phil and Tony; sisters, Frances and Susie, who was born on his birthday. His mother and an infant brother died in 1916 and his father in 1955.
Frank is survived by daughter Suzanne (Mike) Kelly and daughter-in-law, Linda Ciangi; grandchildren, Brett (Julie) Berger, Blake (Jill) Berger, Connie Sue Ciangi (Derrick) Veale, Beth Ciangi (Chris) Robinson, and Frank Ciangi III and Angel; great grandchildren are Brianna and Alex Berger, Bianca and Brikelle Berger, Francesca and Samantha Robinson, Gianluca Ciangi, and Maddie and Sarah Veale. Also surviving are brother, Neil (Joanne) Ciangi; sisters-in-law, Rose Graham, Mary Ciangi, and Rose Ciangi and many nieces and nephews. Frank was a member of the Elks, the Moose Lodge and Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
