Ernest Arthur Lamppa, age 94, of Virginia and formerly of Embarrass died on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at Edgewood Vista in Virginia. He was born November 28, 1921, to Axel and Minnie (Hill) of Embarrass. He graduated from Embarrass High School, attended Eveleth Junior College and Duluth Business School. Ernie began his life long career in 1941 at the family business, Lamppa’s General Merchandise – known as Lamppa’s One Stop Shopping Center. In 1943 he entered the military and served until 1945 as Staff Sergeant in the Finance department of the Army in Thatcham, England and Rennes, France.

He was united in marriage to Lyna Niemi on July 18, 1943, during military leave. Together they made their home in Embarrass and Ernie continued in the family business where he also sold insurance. Ernie spent many years playing for the Virginia Rangers baseball team, bowled on various leagues and was an avid ham radio enthusiast who spoke with other ham operators worldwide. He was a charter member of the Embarrass Fire Department and a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, American Legion, Ely Junior College Board, and Embarrass Credit Union Board. Ernie’s love of his family was the most important thing in his life.

Survivors include two children: Jim (Janice) Lamppa of Eveleth, Lon (Ann) Lamppa of Virginia: Six grandchildren: Derek (Tara) Lamppa, Brent (Julie) Lamppa, Justin (Amanda) Lamppa, Jessica (John) Lamppa-Score, Joshua (Stacie) Lamppa, and Davis (Laura) Lamppa; and seventeen great-grandchildren: Olivia, Luke, Kasey, Isaac, Xander, Ero, Ari, Ella, Emma, Majia, Lexi, Jaxson, Joey and Jace Lamppa and Ava, Alec, and Carson Score; a brother: Alvin (Janet) Lamppa of Embarrass; sisters: Alice Niemi, and Bertha Niemi of Virginia; sister-in-law Evie Lamppa of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Lyna; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and relatives.
