Obituary for Emmitt Leroy Simmons

On Friday August 13, 2021 Emmitt L. Simmons, Sr., loving husband and father of 3 passed away at the age of 96.

He was born to Ed and Myra (Tolar) Simmons in Columbia, MS on October 5, 1924.  After graduating high school in Sumrall, MS, he joined the Navy during World War II and served on a troop transport ship in the Pacific. After his tour of duty in 1946, he returned to Columbia, MS and married his sweetheart, Margie Coker. They moved to Pascagoula, MS and raised their 3 children. He was employed by Newby Electric Company for over 40 years. He had a deep abiding faith and was a member of Fairview Baptist and later Ingalls Avenue Baptist Church. His roles at the churches were many, choir director, deacon, bible study leader, treasurer, and fixit man. He was active in several Masonic organizations, Shrine, Amaranths, and Eastern Star. He was a longtime member of the Gideon organization. After retirement he became a Master Gardener, learned to play the piano and later the harmonica. He loved going to assisted living centers and singing tunes and playing his harmonica.

 

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Margie Marie (Coker) Simmons, parents, brothers Clarence, Clifford, Colon, Shelby, Barney (Neal), and Ray and two sisters Cleta and Christine.

 He is survived by daughter Susan A. Simmons of Pascagoula, MS; sons, Emmitt L. Simmons, Jr. (wife Pamela), of Baton Rouge, LA, and Everett Simmons (wife Sharon) of Spokane WA. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Alison (Simmons) Ricaud (husband Trey) of Baton Rouge, LA, Warren Simmons of Baton Rouge, and Alexander Simmons of Spokane, WA.
