Portland – Elva B. Brooks of Cumberland Center passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014, at Mercy Hospital. She was born in South West Port Mouton, Nova Scotia on November 5, 1914, the daughter of Lucy Roy Burgess and Thomas Burgress.

Elva graduated from Portland High in 1932. She was employed by Union Mutual (UNUM) for 24 years and was the head clerk in the payroll department.

Elva had been a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, now the Williston Immanuel United Church, since 1928. She was very active throughout the church. Elva was a former Sunday School Teacher and at one point was the head of the department. She was a past President of the church’s Woman’s federation. She was also a deaconess, a member of the Sigma Theta Circle and the Ever-ready class.

Elva was a member and past President of the We Neighbors Club of Cumberland. She was a member of the Historical Club and a member of the Music Fellowship of Maine.

Elva was predeceased by her husband, Parker L. Brooks and her son, Parker L. Brooks, Jr. She is survived by her son, Burgess A. Brooks of Missouri. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
