FALMOUTH- E. Clayton Coffin, 82, of Sedgewood Commons went home to be with his Lord and Savior July 8, 2010 after a long illness. He was born in Presque Isle, Maine on February 17, 1928, the son of Elmer E. and Etta Hagerman Coffin. Clayton graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1945 and went on to work as his Dad’s business partner in Coffin’s Hardware Store for over 20 years. At the age of 58, he graduated from the Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, NY.
Clayton faithfully served as pastor of Free Baptist Church in Bridgewater, and associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Toms River, New Jersey, First Baptist Church, Portland and Lisbon Falls Baptist Church, Lisbon Falls. He was well known and respected throughout the state for his involvement in many church organizations and as a Representative of Word of Life Bible Clubs. Clayton’s contribution to service and ministry was evident throughout his life.
After retiring on April 1, 2000, Clayton and Lynette moved to South Portland to spend quality time with family.
In April, 2010 he was recognized by the State of Maine’s “Remember ME Lifetime Achievement Award,” a statewide program that recognizes long term care residents for their life time achievements.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years Lynette McBurnie Coffin. He is also survived by one daughter, Deborah Sprunger and husband, John W., of Lancaster, Pa; three sons, Daniel Coffin, and wife Kathi of Phippsburg, David Coffin and wife Grace of South Portland, and Donald Coffin and his companion Sally Episcopo of Portland; thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Thompson, Dover Foxcroft. Clayton was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who taught by example to serve in the best way that you can.
He is predeceased by his parents, Elmer E. and Etta Hagerman Coffin; a son, Douglas Coffin; and grandson, Patrick Coffin.
