Ionia
Mr. Elijah Ward Sr., 92, of South Ionia died Sunday at Heartland Health Care in Ionia. He was born the Son of John and Adaline Ward on February 16, 1915 in St. Louis, Michigan. He married Clara Wilson on December 28, 1933 in Rodney, Michigan; and moved to Ionia shortly after where he remained until his death. He worked as a Skilled Welder starting in 1942 with the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Company. He retired from the same facility (General Tire) on June 5, 1974. He spent many years helping at the Todd and Ross Gas Station, getting to know scores of people in Ionia. For years he traveled to the U.P. to hunt deer. He also enjoyed Motor Cycle Racing and playing cards. Elijah is preceded in death by a son, Frank; 2 brothers, Frank Ward and Lesley Shellenberger; and sister, Dorothy Shellenberger. He is survived by his Loving Wife of 74 years, Clara. He also leaves a son, Elijah Jr. (Joan) Ward of Fenwick; daughter, Lillian (Frank) Spratto of Portland; grandchildren, Don Ward of Rhode Island, Dennis Ward of Ionia, Colon Battle of Ionia, Cheryl O’Connor of Portland, Daryl Battle of Ionia, Diana Fillwock of Williamston, Frank Ward of Ionia, Laurie Wittenbach of Ionia, and Kris Ward of Ionia; and 14 great-grandchildren.
