Eleanor “Ellie” Wittman, 89, of Warren, MN, passed away on Thursday morning, March 31, 2011 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Eleanor Jean Johnston was born on March 1, 1922 in Mentor, MN, the daughter of Herbert E. and Anna (Madsen) Johnston. She was raised in Angus, MN where she attended country school before graduating from the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN. Eleanor got her teacher’s training in Warren and taught school at Burnside Country School northeast of Warren for 3 years. On June 12, 1946, she married Orval H. Wittman. They made their home 3 A½ miles northeast of Warren where they farmed. Eleanor worked beside Orval on the farm for 37 years before they retired in 1983. She moved to the Landmark Center in January 2011.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was active with the LWML and a Sunday School superintendent and teacher. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of American and an adult leader of the McCrea 4-H for many years.

Eleanor enjoyed camping, handiwork, gardening and reading.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Orval; two children, Kay (Dan) Finley of Roaming Shores, OH and Gale (Jo) Wittman of Warren, MN; six grandchildren, Matthew Finley, Jason (Amy) Finley, Eric Wittman, Cole (Kathy) Wittman, Tara Wittman and Abbi Jo Wittman; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Elaine (Morris) Maruska of East Grand Forks, MN, Stanley Johnston of Crookston, MN and Gene (Jean) Johnston of Angus, MN and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one nephew and several cousins.
