Elbert Earl “Ebbie” Jermyn, Jr, Age 82. Born in Biloxi, Mississippi on February 7, 1939. He was the fourth child of Elbert and Ruth Jermyn, having 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He loved working on cars and anything mechanical which led him to enlist in the Marine Reserves as a mechanic. He eventually made his way to Hammond, Louisiana fixing ball retrieval machines at a bowling alley where he met Mildred Parker.
Mildred Maxine Parker, Age 78. Born in Ponchatoula, Louisiana on September 16, 1943. She was the oldest of 3 children of Philip and Willie Parker, having 2 younger brothers. Not long after graduating high school, she met marine reservist Elbert Jermyn at a bowling alley and fell in love and were married March 18, 1962.
Soon thereafter, Ebbie enlisted full-time in the United States Marine Corps and they had a daughter, Sonia, in 1963. Mildred had to quickly settle into the role of marine wife and new mother when her husband was sent to Vietnam. Ebbie served in Danang, Vietnam from 1965-1966, where he was a jet mechanic. While stationed in NAS Memphis, a son, Stephen was born in 1968. Throughout his Marine career, the family was transferred to many points around the country, among them: Camp Pendleton, Glenview Naval Air Station, NAS Memphis, Andrews Air Force Base and Kaneohe Marine Base, where he was Aircraft Maintenance Chief. Ebbie also had 2 duty tours in Okinawa, Japan.
At each base, Mildred enjoyed working in the Navy Exchange and in Memphis at the Hobby Shop. But mostly, she kept the house running, taking care of the 2 kids, dogs, and handling the many household moves alone, while her husband was sent ahead to the new base. And twice had to be the sole parent while Ebbie was stationed in Japan. In other words, she was a TERRIFIC MARINE CORPS WIFE!!
