Dr. Robert Scott Sykes
Dr. Robert Scott Sykes, 93, died July 15, 2015, in Ann Arbor. He was born February 24, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Roland Scott and Violet Elisabeth (Weisgerber) Sykes. He was raised in Muir, and attended schools in Muir and Ionia, graduating from the Ionia High School in 1939. He attended the University of Michigan and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1946. Dr. Sykes married Barbara C. Hanaford on August 26, 1961, and they resided in Ionia throughout their marriage. Their relationship had a storybook start as they met while vacationing separately in Europe. She preceded him in death in 2010. Dr. Sykes served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He first entered the United States Army in 1943 while he was enrolled as a student at Michigan and served with the 3651st service unit Army Specialized Training Program until his discharge. In 1951, he was a reservist who was called to active duty. He served in the Army Dental Corps primarily with the Dental Service of Headquarters Command of Southern Germany in Munich, and attained the rank of Captain before his discharge in 1954. Dr. Sykes returned to Ionia and operated his dental office on Jackson Street until he left private practice in 1980. He then worked for the State of Michigan until he retired from dentistry in 1989.
