Dr. Louis Anthony Ciampi
August 25, 1932
February 11, 2014
Lifelong Portland resident Dr. Louis Anthony Ciampi, 81, died on the evening of February 11, 2014 after a brief illness.
Louis was born on Washington Avenue in Portland on August 25, 1932 as the eleventh child of Italian immigrants, Michael and Marianna (Grassi) Ciampi. He attended North School, Jack Junior and Cheverus High School (class of 1950) before continuing on to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia (class of 1954) and Dalhousie School of Medicine in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Class of 1958). He married Patricia Karnes of Woodstock, New Brunswick in 1965, and they had six children together at their home on Stevens Avenue.
Dr. Ciampi started his general practice in Gray, Maine after finishing his internship in 1960, and then he moved the private practice to Portland shortly later. He was on staff at the Mercy Hospital as well as Maine Medical Center, and served as the Chief of Family Practice at the Mercy Hospital from 1976-1981. He served as the Student Health Physician at the University of Southern Maine from 1969 until his retirement, and had tenures as an Occupational Physician at Crosby-Laughlin Co., Burnham and Morrill Co., American Can Co, and the City of Portland. He continued serving families in the Greater Portland from the office in his home in the Deering Center area until his son, Michael Ciampi, MD, took over the practice in 1999. Many of his patients continue under the care of the younger Dr. Ciampi at his practice, located at his home in South Portland, to this day. His legacy as a true “Family” practitioner lives on.
Louis was an active member of not only the medical but also the Catholic and Italian-American communities of the city. Among his active community participation were the St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen, the Preble Street Health Clinic, the Board of Directors at Deering Pavilion and the Barron Center, the Holy Name Society and Parish Council at St. Peter’s Church, and the Italian Heritage Center. He was a loyal fan of the Cheverus High School Football and Basketball teams, and enjoyed his role as a Cheverus and St. Brigid’s grandparent in more recent years. Other organizations close to his heart were Catholic Charities, The Cromwell Center for Disabilities Awareness, The Good Cause Thrift Store, and the Maine Children’s Cancer Fund.
Louis was a beloved and devoted father, brother, grandparent, uncle, and friend.
