Portland – Dorothy Oliver Kangas was born on December 29, 1921 in Cadiz Kentucky, the oldest of eight children of Helen and Nathan “Carter” Oliver.
She married Raymond Conway in 1945, who was in the Army and stationed in Kentucky at the time. They later moved to Rockland. Raymond was originally from St. George, Maine. A year later, in 1946, they had twin boys, Raymond and Ralph, then a daughter Doris “Ann” in 1952. Raymond passed away in 1964 and Dorothy remarried in 1966 to Wiljo “Bill” Kangas, also of St. George.
Dorothy had many jobs throughout her life beginning with helping out her parents with seven younger siblings. She also worked in a shoe factory, sardine factory, a seamstress making police uniforms, and lastly retiring from the Camden Woolen Mill in 1986.
Dorothy kept beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and her yard was always immaculate. She could grow anything! She was also extremely talented at sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking. She made dozens of pairs of mittens which she donated to a local school.
She was loved very much by her family and, in 1998, came to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Standish. She was a special lady who was known for her generosity to others. She never lost her southern accent or her quick-witted charm.
Dorothy is survived by her brothers Lee and Travis Oliver, and her sisters Doris Hillyard and Lois Ann Beavers, all of Kentucky. She is also survived by her daughter, Doris “Ann” Hopkins of Standish, and son Ralph Conway of Bucksport. She was predeceased by her son Raymond in 1988. She also has seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews in Maine, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Dorothy passed peacefully at the Barron Center in Portland on October 27, 2014 from natural causes with her children by her side.
