Dorothy B. Kirby, died May 20, 2014, in Damariscotta, Maine at the age of 83. Dot was born in Essex County, New Jersey, on February 13, 1931 to George and Ester Bierman. She called New Jersey home most of her adult life, moving to coastal Maine in her retirement. She studied mathematics, graduating from the University of Vermont and receiving her Master’s degree from New York University. This led to a successful career with Bell Laboratories, where she worked on the development of the UNIX operating system. During her time in New Jersey, she also pursued several lifelong passions. She was a long time member of a ski club, and actively involved in animal advocacy. Her love of animals was apparent to all who knew her. In addition, she was an avid small plane pilot and maintained an active pilot’s license for many years. In Maine, she continued her charitable work, and was active in the Damariscotta River Association and the Round Top Center for the Arts. She was also a member of the Damariscotta/Newcastle Women’s Club. In her retirement, she also greatly enjoyed travel, sailing and gardening. Dot was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Salfeety, and her brother George Bierman. She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews.
