Falmouth – Doris A. Spencer, 95, died of natural causes at her home in Falmouth on Friday, September 27th. She was predeceased in 2010 by her husband, Edgar A. Spencer.
Doris was born in Providence, Rhode Island on February 20, 1918 to H. Edward and Anna D. (Johnson) Anderson. She was the only child of Swedish immigrants and took great pride in her Scandinavian heritage and ability to speak Swedish. She was happily married to Edgar for 70 years, and she devoted her life to her husband, her children and to many volunteer activities. An accomplished hostess, she was often found playing popular piano songs (by ear) as her guests sang along.
She and her family lived in Portland until 1962, then for seven years in Weston, MA. In 1969, the family moved to Cape Elizabeth and then finally settled in Falmouth in 1977. In Weston, Doris enjoyed her job as the parish secretary for the town’s Unitarian Universalist Church. In Maine, she campaigned for the Community Chest/United Way, and served on the boards of the Junior League of Portland and Catherine Morrill Day Nursery. She was also a member of the Women’s Board of the Maine General Hospital (Maine Medical Center), and for two years served as its president. She especially enjoyed scouring art exhibits and selecting paintings by local artists to adorn the walls of the hospital’s coffee shop. An active member of State Street Church for more than forty years, she served on various committees and as a deaconess. For many years, she also enjoyed playing golf with her husband and friends at the Portland Country Club.
Doris is survived by her loving children Suzanne and Jeffrey of Portland, Nancy Lieber (William) of Danville, CA, and by her devoted grandchildren Katherine, Elizabeth and Jonathan (Tara) Lieber.
