Donald Downs Sr. age 84 died Wednesday, August 8, 2013, at the Aspen Grove Assisted Living facility in Chisholm, MN. He is survived by his wife, Clara, his sons Donald (Barbara) Downs Jr. of Hibbing, Frank (Cheryl) Downs of Casper, Wyoming, Bret (Kathy) Downs of Buckley, WA, and his daughter Connie (Chuck) Dallas of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
As a resident of Hibbing since 1960 when he took over the management of the local Montgomery Ward store, he began working for Minnesota Power in 1969 where he retired after 21 years. Don served as a trustee of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He was a member of the Hibbing Skate Club where he often strapped on the long blades for an energetic workout. Don enjoyed horseback riding and was active in the Minnesota Horse Council where he was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Cut Foot Sioux, Stony Brook, and Togo Horse Camps. A frequent contributor to the Hibbing Tribune’s Editorial Comments page, Don was outspoken on various local issues in the area of public utilities.
