Cumberland Foreside, ME- Dr. Dick Conrad Rice, 82, passed away at his home with his loving family at his side on August 28, 2013, following a long illness. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of Carl and Frances Roberts Rice.
During his lifetime Dick resided in Ohio and Maine: Farmington, Orono and Cumberland Foreside.
Dick shared 63 years of marriage with his loving wife Jeannette (Urban) Rice. Dick & Jeannette both grew up on working farms in Ashtabula County, Ohio where they met in High School. Dick taught high school agriculture classes while earning his first advanced degree. Dick enjoyed a 15 year career in the Ohio Public School System as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools. After earning his Doctorate Degree in Education at Ohio State University, Dick moved with his family of six children to Farmington, Maine in 1968. There he began his life long career at the University of Maine at Farmington as Dean of Education, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor. Nearing retirement in the 1990’s, Dick left administration to teach the Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education at UMF.
Dick had many students and lifelong friends in Farmington and Orono. For decades, his family spent summers on Embden Pond.
