Phippsburg-David James King Sr. passed on Monday, October 31st after a spirited fight against a sudden illness.
David was born on October 9th, 1957, to Amos and Mary Anne King. In his childhood, David moved several times following his father’s Air Force placements. He took great care of his keepsakes from these places and, though he was young during the travels, enjoyed retelling stories that were handed down to him.
The family settled in Phippsburg, and it was there that David met Michelle Doughty. Dating as teenagers led to marriage in their early 20s. Their kids, Shalon, and David Jr. were soon to follow. David liked to tell tales of his “scrappy” days but made no bones that Michelle had tamed him. In a generation when not all fathers were “hands-on,” David drove Shalon to practices, attended every game (albeit far behind Michelle because of her enthusiastic volume), and passed down his love for the outdoors and automotive tinkering to David Jr.
Soon after losing Michelle, David retired from over 30 years of working at Bath Iron Works. He claimed to be “busier than ever” in his retirement.
David was predeceased by: his wife Michelle Doughty King, his son David King Jr, his father Amos King, his mother Mary Anne King, mother-in-law Nancy Doughty, and brother-in-law Buddy Doughty. David is survived by his daughter Shalon Hersom, son-in-law Josh Hersom, granddaughter Sloan Hersom, grandson Grady Hersom, Sister Peggy Fleming, Sister Sandy Murray and her Husband Pete Murray, father-in-law Stanley Doughty, sister-in-law Cathy Doughty, sister-in-law Abby Doughty, brother-in-law Michael Doughty and his wife Ginger Doughty, along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.
