David W. Berglund, age 93, a longtime resident of Ely, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 in St. Michael’s Heath & Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. He was born October 12, 1915 in Rice, MN, the son of David and Mary (Lindgren) Berglund. David was a United States Army Veteran serving in WWII from 1942 to 1945 in the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Asiatic Theatre of Operations, and the New Guinea, Southern Philippines (Liberation), and Luzon Campaigns, being decorated with the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion Post #248 in Ely, the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #2717 in Ely, the Grand Lodge of Minnesota – Ely Lodge #288, Royal Arch Mason Chapter 77 of Virginia, and the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar in Eveleth. He worked at the Ely Cooperative, DMIR Railroad, and Reserve Mining in Babbitt.
He is survived by his nieces, Theo (Earl “Roger”) Harrelson and Gayle Ginther; and a nephew, Roger Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Irene Luthanen, Helen Anderson, Eleanor Blackburn, and Eunice Berglund.
