Charlotte M. Gay, 82, passed away at the home she grew up in, two days before her 83rd birthday, on the evening of May 4, 2011. Born in Newcastle on May 6, 1928, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Smith) Sherman. Charlotte grew up in Damariscotta, attending local schools and graduating from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. After graduation, she went on to further her education to become a nurse. She worked at Miles Memorial Hospital before going to work at Sylvania Electric in Waldoboro for a few years. She would eventually return to Miles and would stay there until her retirement in 1991. Mrs. Gay was a collector, and loved to collect knickknacks of all sorts, but especially anything owl or bear related. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her three husbands, Louis Bailey, Kenneth Cotton and Elverton Gay; as well as a son, Roger Bailey, who passed away in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Perkins of Damariscotta; her son, Wade Bailey of Damariscotta; a sister, Carolyn Carter of Portland; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
