Charles Russell of Alna, 83, went to be with the Lord on March 31, 2012 after a brief illness. Charlie was born Aug. 28, 1928 to George Albert and Hazel Ada (Keyes) Russell. He grew up in North Newcastle and attended school there through 8th grade, then went to work driving a team of horses in the woods. He entered the army at age 17, and completed 9th grade while serving. He served two tours in the Korean War, and at other times was stationed in Hawaii, Okinawa Japan, the Aleutian Islands, and Maryland, among other places. Charlie married the love of his life, Lucy Hagar, on July 4, 1954, and resigned from military service 9 months later when their first child was born. They returned to Maine, and Charlie began a 36-year job as a welder at BIW. During this time they lived in Alna and had 4 more children.
