Charles Allen Burleson, 92, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 6, 2010, at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. Born in Schenectady, NY, in 1918 and raised in Erie, PA, he was the son of Charles Allen Burleson and Marguerite Thresher Burleson, whose families had a long history in Connecticut. He graduated from Tulane University as a Naval Reserve officer; he saw active duty during World War II on a destroyer in the South Pacific, and served with the amphibious forces of the Pacific Fleet. Following his naval service he completed graduate work in Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley, and then began his career at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C. For many years he was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where he supervised examiner training and education. After retirement from the Fed, he worked as an independent financial consultant. He settled, and raised a family in Plainfield, NJ, where he was a devoted member of the Covenant United Methodist Church. For more than 50 years, mid-coast Maine was an important part of his life. After many years as a summer resident in South Waldoboro, he moved permanently to Bristol in 1997, and became a member of the New Harbor United Methodist Church. He had a deep, and lifelong, interest in music and sang in many choirs and choral groups. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Sturtevant Burleson of Bristol; his children, Katherine Bolton and her husband James of Scarborough, ME, William Burleson of Bremen, ME, and Marguerite Barbetti and her husband John of Guilford, CT; as well as his grandchildren, Anna Bolton, Christopher and Amy Burleson, and Samuel and Rion Barbetti. The family is indebted to the staff of Cove’s Edge for their gentle and affectionate care during the past three years.
