Catherine Matthews Risley, 97, of Damariscotta, formerly of Walpole, passed away at her home on the evening of April 27th 2013. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 17th 1915, she was the daughter of Bertram and Nan Nicolson Fulton. Catherine went to Jordanhill College School and graduated from Glasgow High School for girls in 1933. She would go on to further her education at Sproll’s College where she earned her degree in 1935. She met her husband, Bernard Risley, on the Hogmanay (the Scottish term for the last day of the year) of 1943/1944 and they were married in April of 1944 in Glasgow. Bernard was an aeronautical engineer and they would live in Prestwick for two years before moving to Boston. They then went to Dallas and New York before moving to Walpole in 1950. Until the Wiscasset Airport opened, they would spend two months each winter near airports in California, Kansas, Florida and Boston, before moving back to Walpole full-time until the airfield was sold. They eventually settled into a home on the Bristol Road in Damariscotta. While in the Damariscotta area, she was a member of the Twin Village Women’s Club and the Miles Memorial Hospital League where she was active with the annual rummage sale. She also loved the Skidompha Second Hand Book Shop and worked there when she was able to. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Bernard, in 2010. She is survived by many cousins in Scotland, England, Canada, Australia and Japan.
