TOPSHAM — Carole M. Lewis, 73, of Topsham passed away on January 23rd after a brief and heroic battle against cancer with her daughter and family by her side.

She was born on January 14th 1944 to Guy and Rita Lewis of Brunswick Maine. She traveled all over the US with her parents as a child. Carole would tell you her education suffered as a result, but she wouldn’t have changed a thing. She was able to see different places, meet wonderful people and spend time with her grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. In her adolescent years they finally settled back in Brunswick, Maine.

When Carole was young, she attended modeling school in Denver. She was offered a modeling job in NY City but decided to stay in Maine when she learned her mom was expecting another child at age 40. Carole loved children and in the early 80’s she had a daycare in her home. She started her daycare with Brunswick PD’s children as a majority of who she cared for and at one point she had 12 kids under the age of 2. At night she worked down the street at Vincenzo’s Restaurant. Carole worked hard her whole life. She was previously employed by Freeport Shoe, J.J. Brush, Dionne Commons, Eastland Shoe and before retiring she worked for Roger and Ann Alexander at Ye Ole English Fish & Chips in Brunswick.

Carole was a single mom of a beautiful daughter, Judy. For the past 23 years she lived with her daughter and helped raise her granddaughters and great-grandson. Her partner and best friend of 42 years, Cheryl Austin of Lisbon Falls, passed away in 2013.

Carole was a strong independent women, mother and friend. She could often be seen sitting in her car outside Dunkin Donuts in Topsham. She loved people watching while drinking her coffee. She would have conversations with strangers and met a lot of great people. This was the type of person Carole was. She loved to joke and laugh. She was easy to talk to and she started every conversation with a smile. She always made you feel loved and understood and was never judgmental. Every week she would play cards with her cousin and best friend, Deb Garrison.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Guy E Lewis and Rita Nadeau Lewis.

Carole is survived by her loving daughter Judy A Lewis and son-in-law Tony Lucas of Topsham; Granddaughters Savannah Lewis and husband Justin Baker of Freeport; Sabrina Lewis of Westport Island, Great grandchildren Bently Lewis and Lily Baker. Carole is also survived by 4 step grand-children and 4 Step Great-Grandchildren from the Lucas family whom she loved as her own, younger brother Richard D Lewis and his wife Celina of Lisbon and many cousins and dear friends.

A special thanks to Debra Freeman at Desmond’s for all the love, respect and understanding you’ve given the family during this time.
