Carl M. Spitzley, age 94, passed away on January 16, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born March 29, 1918 in Westphalia, Michigan to William and Seraphine (Martin) Spitzley. He married Anna Zimmerman of Westphalia, MI on September 20th, 1943. Carl served heroically in WWII in the Fourth Infantry, 12th regiment and saw combat in the Battle of the Hertgen Forest where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he returned to the Spitzley Hardware Company with his father William and his brother Jim. He was also employed by TRW in Portland were he retired in 1980 after 26 years of service. He retired from the hardware business in 1981. He was a faithful member of Portland St. Patrick’s Parish and a 75 year member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Anna, daughter Carol and son-in-law David Teachout, grandson Matthew Teachout, father William and mother Seraphine, brothers James and Thomas. He is survived by children John (Judy) Spitzley of Hudson, WI, Steve (Karen) Spitzley of Portland, MI and Mary Ellen Spitzley of Portland, MI, brother William and sister Alice L’Huillier, grandchildren Michelle (Joel) VanSlambrouck, Christopher Teachout, Scott (Shelly) Teachout, Michael Teachout, Amanda (Michael) Wolf, Brendan Spitzley and Kelly (Adam) Kubista and 13 great grandchildren. Carl loved baseball and the Detroit Tigers except when a Tiger pitcher would get a little wild and he would say, “He don’t know where the plate is”. Carl was loved and respected by his family and will be dearly missed especially by the little ones who were always drawn to him and loved to spend time with him. The family would also like to thank Hospice of Lansing and all of the wonderful nurses and aides who helped care for Carl during his last days.
