Age 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008. He was born on November 11, 1922 in Plymouth, Pennsylvania the son of Caleb and Ruth (Moyer) Shonk. Dr. Shonk was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving as an Army Medic during World War II in Europe. He earned his BS and MS Degrees from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and was employed as a Research Biochemist for Merck in Rahway, New Jersey. He earned his P.H.D. at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. In 1966, he and his family moved to Michigan where Dr. Shonk became a Professor of Biochemistry at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. He enjoyed astronomy, woodworking, and leading adult Sunday school class at Winn United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; brother, Bob Shonk; Surviving are his daughter, Karen (Dennis) Opperman of Portland and their children: Laura (fiancé Hans), Mark (Abbie), Bethany (fiancé, David), Julie, and Michael; son, Carl (Alice) Shonk of Mayville and their children, Rachael, Caleb, Caitlin, Rebecca, and Andrew; brother, Harry (Jacqueline) Shonk; sister-in-law, Reiko Shonk.
